Hirsutism refers to excessive hair growth on the face and body in women. Darker hair thickens in areas where male hair grows, such as the upper lip, chin, and sideburns. Hirsutism is common in 5% to 10% of women and is usually severe. Increased body hair is common in white women of Mediterranean origin. Most women do not need medical care. Therapy may improve hirsutism. But it may take months. Hirsutism cannot be prevented.
